Culinary experience at Orangery Restaurant

The "Burghley House" in Stamford, England, is not a standalone restaurant in the traditional sense, but rather a historic estate that houses the renowned "Orangery Restaurant". This restaurant is located within the walls of Burghley House, one of Britain's most splendid Elizabethan country houses, built between 1555 and 1587 by William Cecil, the Lord High Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth I. The estate is situated on the edge of the charming town of Stamford and is surrounded by extensive gardens and a park designed by Capability Brown. The "Orangery Restaurant" makes use of the elegant architecture of an 18th-century building and is a central part of the visitor experience at Burghley House, which is now managed by the Burghley House Preservation Trust, a foundation dedicated to preserving the Cecil family heritage.

Burghley House with historic ambiance

Culinary-wise, the "Orangery Restaurant" emphasizes local and seasonal ingredients, often sourced directly from the Burghley Estate or the surrounding region. One standout dish is the "Honey Roasted Pork Belly", which delights guests with its crispy texture and the sweet, floral undertones of honey – an example of the fusion of traditional British cuisine with a touch of sophistication. Equally popular is the "Beetroot and Goat's Cheese Tart", a light, vegetarian option that perfectly reflects the season with its earthy sweetness and creamy cheese notes. For a sweet finish, the "Burghley Chocolate Brownie" entices with its rich chocolate flavor and a side of local cream, often considered the highlight of a meal. The dishes are prepared with a focus on quality and freshness, enhancing the restaurant's reputation as a place for refined dining.

The drinks menu offers a selection that complements the food harmoniously. The Afternoon Tea is particularly cherished, offering a classic experience with a variety of teas, homemade scones, and delicate sandwiches – a perfect way to round off a visit to Burghley House. The coffee, prepared by skilled baristas, is also a highlight and is often chosen as an accompaniment to a piece of cake or a light snack. The beverages reflect the same care that goes into the food, inviting guests to linger and enjoy.

The ambiance of the "Orangery Restaurant" is characterized by the historical elegance of the building, creating a bright, airy atmosphere with its tall windows and views of the adjacent rose garden. The interior decor is stylish yet relaxed, blending classic elements with modern comfort while preserving the ambiance of a grand country estate. In the summer, the outdoor area with tables amidst roses and lavender opens up, enhancing the dining experience and emphasizing the connection to nature. The proximity to the impressive gardens and the house itself makes the restaurant an integral part of the Burghley experience, often combined with a tour of the 18 grand rooms or the garden grounds.

Even though I like going to Burnley for a walk round. Was really disappointed with the adventure play area and garden of surprise which none of the fountains where working. Also the garden cafe was not great and no a lot of food options for small children

Had a lovely time with my family (two cousins, a mum and a granny) today when we went to the adventure playground. There was lots to do in the playground as well as a fun scavenger hunt about finding moles. We also went to the garden of surprises which was super interactive and fun. At the end we went to the cafe and got some cakes and drinks. Didn't go in the house but looks nice. All in all a great day out and we will definitely be returning, thank you!

This place was really cool. I wanted to see it because it was featured in the newer pride and prejudice movie. The paintings and furniture are amazing and the architecture. Place is huge and better, less busy than Buckingham Palace tour. The gardens were great also. We were lucky to have great weather. Only issue was the kids playground area closed way too soon. Should be sundown or something.

We visited here for the Christmas Fair and it was lovely. All the staff were incredibly friendly, it was well organised and they had a good variety of stalls to look at. It had a lovely Christmas vibe and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We would definitely return in the summer months to visit the House and properly look around.

Burghley House is a wonderful estate situated on the edge of Stamford. The house originated from the 16th century and holds a vast array of fine art and furniture. The staff are welcoming, helpful and happy to answer questions about the estate. The gardens are well maintained, with a large children’s play area suitable for all ages. Highly recommend a visit here!
